Michalis Adamis “Byzantine Passion”

  • This event has passed.

April 24 | 19:30 - 21:00

“Byzantine Passion”, an iconic work by Michalis Adamis, will be presented on Wednesday 24/4/2024, at 7.30 p.m. at the Agia Sophia church of Thessaloniki, from the “Yiannis Mantakas” Choir of AUTH, the “Choir Workshop” of the Department of Music Studies of AUTH and the Byzantine Choir “Eufonon”.

The work is written for a four-part mixed choir, a Byzantine choir, soloists and percussion -as church “talanton” and bells. The first performance of the work took place in 1968 in the Rotunda monument in Thessaloniki, in the presence of the composer, with the late Yiannis Mantakas as conductor. In the three parts of the work, the Betrayal of Judas, the Arrest and Interrogation of Jesus by the Priests and Pontius Pilatos and the Crucifixion, the supreme act of sacrifice that frees the human race “..from the curse of the Law…” In this unique work, the composer “binds” in his own special way the Byzantine music tradition with the European choral music, as well as the Byzantine-style melodic recitative narratives with the recitatives of the great Passion Oratorios of Western European music.
